Chestnut Avenue beneath I-5 will soon be home to the city’s first permanent public art at a freeway underpass. The selected artist team, Greenmeme, has scheduled more events to gather community input to help develop the concept for the future public art.

These gatherings offer an opportunity to share your ideas, stories and inspirations for the underpass artwork. If you can’t make the events, please email us your ideas and feedback at arts@carlsbadca.gov. 

The project team also gathered input at several community events in April and May. This summer, Greenmeme will continue to develop the concept for the artwork based on all of the community input gathered. We anticipate providing an update to the Arts Commission in early September.

Background

The public art project aligns with improvements to the Chestnut Avenue underpass, including a new bike lane and enhanced sidewalks, which are being built by Caltrans and SANDAG through the Build NCC project.

The selected artist team, Greenmeme, is a collaboration between artists Freyja Bardell and Brian Howe. They have created several public art projects throughout California and beyond, each unique to the values and history of the communities where they’re located.
