2025 marks the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth. For two and a half centuries, her novels have captivated readers and inspired scholars worldwide. Austen, the beloved author of six classics—"Pride and Prejudice," "Sense and Sensibility," "Mansfield Park," "Emma," "Persuasion," and "Northanger Abbey"—continues to shape the literary landscape.

October 2025 also marks the 214th anniversary of the publication of "Sense and Sensibility." Celebrate this milestone with us at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane, where special events and resources will highlight the enduring legacy of this legendary literary icon.

William Cannon Art Gallery  

Join two librarians in the Cannon Art Gallery for an in-depth exploration of all of Austen’s literary works. The discussion will focus on Jane Austen’s unforgettable heroes, trademark witty banter and the enduring themes that keep her stories compelling more than two centuries later.

Join us at the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane to celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday! Enjoy an engaging lecture by Linda Miller, Board Member of the Jane Austen Society, San Diego Region, as she explores the life of this historic literary figure and the enduring impact of her works over the past two centuries.

Join us for a free screening of the 2007 film inspired by the life of Jane Austen.

For Children: 

Baby Lapsit (Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane)  
Wednesday, Oct. 15, 10:30 a.m.  

For ages 0 to 18 months (pre-walkers): A 20-minute special baby bonding time through songs, rhymes and finger plays. Stay after for a 15-minute group play time. Limited seating. This program will include a reading of the board book, “Persuasion: A Colors Primer.”   

Tinker Tuesday (Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane)  

Tuesday, Oct. 21, 3:30 p.m.  

Recommended for grades Kindergarten to grade 3: An in-person weekly program centered on STEAM activities that will lead your child to take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. Tinker Tuesday is held in the Gowland Meeting Room.  

Spotlight theme: Victorian Age 

 

In loving memory of Librarian Leila Dooley, who worked at the Carlsbad City Library from 1987 to 2018. Leila loved everything about Jane Austen, and we dedicate this anniversary to her.
