    The Exploration HUB is more than a room - it's a community. Whether you're a coder, a crafter, or a curious explorer, there's a spot for you here. Remember: in this space, the only limit is your imagination. 

    What’s available?

    • Windows laptops (for in-house checkout only)
    • 3 Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 3D printers
    • Coding and Robotics with MakeCode and Micro:bit
    • 2 Silhouette Cameo 5
    • Memory Lab - VHS/VHS-C, HI-8, 8mm and Super 8mm Film, Photo Scanner

    What are the rules and guidelines? 

    • Guidelines:
      • Staff: teach, guide and support.
      • Patrons: Design, build and complete their own self-directed projects.
    •  Rules:
      • Ages 12+: Independent use of HUB equipment. (HUB laptops: 12+ only.)
      • Ages 9–11: Parent/guardian help recommended. Required for HUB laptops and equipment requiring them (e.g., Silhouette Cameo, 3D printing)
      • Under 9: Parent/guardian must be present and assisting with projects.

        Staff may limit use for safety and are not substitutes for parent/guardian assistance.

     

    Exploration HUB hours:

    Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 6:45 p.m.
    Friday - Saturday, 9 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
    Sunday, 1 p.m - 4:45 p.m. (3D print submissions are not available Sundays.)

    Makerspace and Memory Lab

    Using the Makerspace

    The Exploration HUB is open to teens and adults to learn, create and collaborate through hands-on experiences. All equipment and software are available on a first come, first serve basis and staff is available to get you started. The library offers STEAM programming for children ages 12 and under in our children's area, located on the first floor. Check out the Children's Events Calendar for programs like "Tinker Tuesdays" and "Steam Builder's Club".

    Step into the HUB, where lines of code come alive! Here you will find:  
    • MakeCode: User-friendly programming platform developed by Microsoft that allows beginners to create and experiment with code.
    • MakeCode Arcade: Whether you are a beginner or an experienced coder, this platform offers a fun and accessible way to dive into game development. Create retro-style arcade games and test them on a retro controller. 
    • Micro:bits: Tinker with this popular device a tiny programmable computer that is compatible with MakeCode and MakeCode Arcade.
    • Mini Cutebot: More than just a pocket-sized robot - it is a gateway to creativity, coding and hands on exploration powered by Micro: bit.

    3D Printing and Design

    Bambu Lab X1 3D Printer

    Turn designs into tangible objects with free 3D printing. Stop by the Exploration HUB with your .STL file and staff will assist you. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept 3D print files by email. 

    Are you a beginner or have questions about your 3D design? Come in the HUB and staff can get you set up with a laptop to use Tinkercad.com and start your 3D design journey. 

    Electronic Crafting

    Crafters rejoice! We have two Silhouette Cameo 5 machines and Studio software on Windows laptops so you can design and cut. 

    • Vinyl Decals: Express yourself with custom decals to personalize laptops, water bottles, phone cases and more.
    • Paper Crafting: Create intricate greeting cards, banners and party decor. The only limit is your imagination!
    • Fabric Applique: Design custom t-shirts and tote bags. Cut heat transfer vinyl like a pro!

    The Friends of the Carlsbad City Library support the Exploration HUB and we have free materials you can use during your time in the HUB.

    Unfortunately, we do not provide products like t-shirts or tote bags. All material types, colors and patterns will vary based on inventory.

     Programs and Activities

    What is an Orientation? 

    Not sure what you can do in the Exploration HUB? Patrons ages 13 and older are welcome to attend an orientation, all three occurring on the first week of each month, where staff will go over one of the following topics and allow time for discussion, questions and hands on practice time. No registration required, it is on a first come, first served basis.

      • Learn about 3D design, how to start designing and how to submit and "slice" 3D files to get printed in the Exploration HUB.
    • Coding and Robotics
      • Learn what coding is, why we need it and how to start coding using MakeCode, MakeCode Arcade and how to use Micro:bits to play retro-arcade games or move a mini robot. 
    • Crafting with Silhouette Cameo
      • Learn about the Silhouette Cameo, an electronic cutting tool and what you can make with it, from personalized tote bags to party decorations. See the variety of materials that can be used and how the Studio software offers a variety of options for you to be creative.
