Carlsbad Reads Together is an annual city-wide event held every April that connects the entire community through reading.

Announcing the 2026 Carlsbad Reads Together book selection

 “Stay True" by Hua Hsu

Selected with input from library patrons, the 2026 Carlsbad Reads Together adult selection is "Stay True" by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hua Hsu. This coming-of-age memoir is set in Northern California in the 1990s and explores themes of friendship, self-expression, belonging and loss.

Readers may reserve a copy from Carlsbad City Library, available in book, eBook or eAudiobook formats.

Save the date: On April 23 at 6 p.m. at the Schulman Auditorium, the library will host an evening with Hua Hsu. The event will also be livestreamed. We hope to see you there!

 

2026 Carlsbad Reads Together Youth & Teen Selections

Thank you to everyone who participated in community voting! Based on votes collected at all three library locations, the community has selected the Youth and Teen companion titles for Carlsbad Reads Together 2026.

Youth Selection

Celebrate creativity, self-expression and the power of making your mark. This inspiring picture book will be featured in storytimes and hands-on programs for children throughout April.

 

 

Teen Selection

Exploring themes of identity, loss, friendship, and self-discovery, this powerful novel is the Teen companion title for Carlsbad Reads Together and will be highlighted throughout April.

 

 

 

These titles will be featured alongside the adult selection during Carlsbad Reads Together programs and events throughout April. Thank you for helping shape this community-wide reading experience!

All-Ages Zine Program

Thursday, April 2, 4–5:30 p.m., Library Learning Center

Get inspired by "Stay True" in this hands-on workshop where participants will create their own zines, blending art, writing and personal storytelling. Explore themes of identity, memory, and meaningful moments while learning simple techniques to express your story creatively. Families and participants of all ages welcome!

Memoir Writing Workshop

Many of us have stories to tell from our own lives, but a memoir can be a difficult genre to master. Join a former professor of English and Creative Nonfiction to get tips, exercises and a plan for creating your own memoir.

Exploration HUB

Join us in the Exploration HUB, the Carlsbad City Library’s makerspace and memory lab, for Carlsbad Reads Together-themed activities inspired by "Stay True." Digitize family videos, photos, or personal archives, and design and cut personalized stickers, zine covers, or text-based designs using lyrics, phrases, or symbols that reflect your story. Just like in "Stay True," these hands-on projects explore how taste, culture, and aesthetics shape identity and help us express who we are.
