Carlsbad City Library cardholders can check out a FREE California State Parks day-use vehicle pass, day packs or adventure packs including pass and hiking accessories. Day packs include:

• One California State Parks Pass
• One pair of binoculars & one compass
• One California wildlife guide and one California wildflowers guide in a plastic envelope
• One California State Parks keychain
• One Carlsbad City Library keychain with a QR code that links to the library home page

Adventure packs include everything in the day pack, with additional items:

• One pair of hiking poles
• One flashlight and pocket microscope
• One rain poncho and set of dry bags
• One mosquito head net and safety whistle

Borrowers are responsible for returning all components of the hiking backpack. Here's how it works:

1. Plan your adventure. See if a backpack or pass is available and/or place one on hold to access 200+ participating state park units. A list of ineligible parks is available at CheckOutCAStateParks.com. Passes cannot be used at national, county, city or any other parks besides eligible California State Parks. View the interactive map to explore eligible state parks throughout California. Some parks may require advance reservations; please contact the individual park about restrictions or closures before visiting.

2. Park for free. The California State Library Parks Pass is valid for entry of one passenger vehicle with capacity of nine people or less or one highway licensed motorcycle. It is not valid for any other fees, including camping or group use fees, special events, tours, additional vehicle fees, etc. It is not valid at national, county, city or any other parks. Pass does not guarantee a parking space.

3. Return your pass/backpack to a service desk inside the library. Passes and backpacks check out for ten days and are eligible for up to three automatic renewals if no one is waiting to check them out. Please return items on time so other community members can explore the outdoors. If you finish your adventure before the due date, please consider returning the pass early so another adventure can begin! Report lost passes to the library by calling 442-339-2019 or emailing librarian@carlsbadca.gov.
