The Carlsbad City Library subscribes to nine genealogy databases:

• America’s Historical Newspapers - Search and browse more than 1,100 historical American newspapers published across three centuries. Available at all Carlsbad City Library locations and remotely to Carlsbad City Library cardholders.
• America's News - Explore and stay informed on local and national topics, people and events in areas such as business, health, education, jobs and careers, political and social issues and more. Available at all Carlsbad City Library locations and remotely to Carlsbad City Library cardholders.
• American Ancestors - Maintained by the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the American Ancestors database contains over one billion records with specialized coverage of the northeastern states. Available at all Carlsbad City Library locations and remotely to Carlsbad City Library cardholders.
• Ancestry Library Edition - Onsite only. Easy to use with an enormous collection of international resources, Ancestry Library Edition delivers the world’s most popular genealogy website to users. Remote access ended December 2021. 
• Archives Unbound - Topically-focused digital collections with primary sources documenting World and US History, including records relevant to genealogy research. Archives Unbound is available at all Carlsbad City Library locations and remotely to Carlsbad City Library cardholders.
• FamilySearch - Onsite only. Search for worldwide genealogical records and create a family tree. FamilySearch offers over 6 billion searchable names and 2 billion images of historical genealogical records, with over 300 million free records and images added annually.
• Findmypast - Onsite only. Findmypast contains genealogical records from England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, the United States and smaller record sets from around the globe. They provide the largest online collection of Irish records and parish records. They are also the exclusive providers of the 1921 Census of England & Wales. • Fold3 - Featuring records documenting military history, Fold3 provides access to international resources related to armed forces, in addition to naturalization records and city directories, and is available at all Carlsbad City Library locations and remotely to Carlsbad City Library cardholders.
• HeritageHub - Obituaries and death notices starting from 1704 from thousands of newspapers across the United States. Available at all Carlsbad City Library locations and remotely to Carlsbad City Library cardholders.
• Heritage Quest - Access to primary sources including census records, city directories, seven million pages of genealogy books and the Library of Congress Photo Collection. Available in the Library and remotely to Carlsbad City Library cardholders.
• Newspapers.com Library Edition - Over 85 million digitized pages, dating from the early 1700s to the early 2000s, are available in the library and remotely to Carlsbad City Library cardholders.

Internet Computers

The Genealogy & Carlsbad History computer lab has six internet computers dedicated for genealogy and Carlsbad history research. A Carlsbad City Library card with internet access is required to sign onto these computers.

Microform Scanner

View, scan, print and/or save images from our microform collection.

Book Scanner

Scan and save pages from our genealogy reference collection or other books.

Photo Scanner

Scan and save photos and negatives.

Branching Out Video Series

Introducing a series of short videos created by our library staff to help you expand your genealogy research with online resources.

• Branching Out: Using wildcards in Ancestry Library Edition. Wildcards are a tool for genealogists to use when searching databases to account for misspellings and spelling variations in the records of our ancestors. In this first episode of Branching Out, you’ll learn how the strategic use of wildcards can reveal hidden genealogy records in Ancestry.com Library Edition.
• Branching Out: Non-military records in Fold3 Library Edition. Fold3 is a well-known source for military records but a sometimes-overlooked source for non-military records. In this episode of Branching Out, you’ll learn how to discover and use the over 280 non-military genealogy records that are available in Fold3 with your Carlsbad City Library card.
